A Once in a Lifetime Opportunity Turns New Veterinary School Grad into a Practice Owner

Novice veterinarian takes the reins of a 14-person veterinary practice staff to the next level of success

Realizing a long-term professional goal in the early stages of a career can be life changing. Such was the case for Melissa Rivers, DVM, business owner, Somerset Veterinary Hospital in Ames, Iowa. “I vividly remember my first encounter with the possibility of practice ownership. I was just under two years out of veterinary school and had returned from a run on a Wednesday evening. My boss, a veterinary practice owner, called me and cut right to the chase, ‘Dr. Rivers I’ve got a proposal for you. I am selling the practice and have an offer from a corporate business, but if you’d like to own the hospital, it is yours.’”

She continues, “I had considered ownership in my 10-year plan, but never in my wildest dreams did I think I would be presented with an opportunity like this before I even turned 30! In most practice owners’ mindsets, I would still be a ‘new graduate’. Before I even let my mind completely comprehend the scale of the decision that I was about to make, my heart immediately said absolutely yes. I know this type of opportunity doesn’t happen often for most veterinarians. I cherish the fact that I not only found my dream job right out of veterinary school but then soon realized the joy of being the owner of Somerset Veterinary Hospital.”

Dr. Rivers attended Iowa State University for undergraduate studies, during which time she also worked at a feline specialty clinic as a veterinary assistant and a laboratory assistant in the Department of Pathology at the veterinary school. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Science and graduated from Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine with a DVM with honors.

While attending school at Iowa State University, Dr. Rivers became smitten with the local community and knew this would become her home. “Fate brought me Somerset Veterinary Hospital,” she says with a smile. The previous owner hired her as a new graduate veterinarian right after graduation and she dove into the life of fast learning and building her place in the community.

Somerset Veterinary Hospital is an AAHA-accredited, full-service facility, equipped to provide comprehensive services and treatment for pets at every life stage. Their services are focused on preventative and diagnostic care, internal medicine, pain management, advanced surgery, dentistry and more.

Their slogan, “Cutting edge medicine with old-fashioned integrity” is most fitting for a practice that includes three additional veterinarians and a support team of 10. The hospital philosophy is heavily based on teamwork and a family-like atmosphere. The practice’s mission is “to make our patients feel at home while providing an atmosphere that will make the entire family feel comfortable and welcome through compassionate care, exceptional service, and a team who loves to laugh and learn together.”

Adds Dr. Rivers, “We are different than other local facilities due to our strong relationship with Iowa State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. Additionally, we work closely with the University to not only transfer care between facilities and take on their referrals to us and vice versa, but we also provide open lines of communication between a specialty hospital and private practice. This relationship has developed and strengthened due to our high standard of care, strong medicine experience and the expertise of our surgical team of doctors and staff.”

The Strengths of Burzenski & Company

What secured the relationship between a practice owner in Iowa and the veterinary accounting and tax services of Connecticut-based Burzenski & Company? Quite frankly it was due to reputation and past, proven experience.

“The previous practice owner utilized Burzenski & Company for accounting services since startup of the practice in 2011,” says Dr. Rivers. “I was initially grandfathered in based on his positive experience. However, I don’t know that I could have survived my first year of practice ownership as a young veterinarian without the insight of the staff at Burzenski. They provided me with accounting services.

“But more importantly, the practice management services provided by the firm’s veterinary consultant Andreas Pahl and the extensive understanding of both what it takes to maintain a successful growing business, and more specifically, a veterinary practice, through firm partners Gary Glassman, CPA and Melody Mann-Fox, CPA, helped me survive one of the most challenging years of my young career.”

In addition to the expert tax, accounting, operational management and financial advice provided by Burzenski & Company, Dr. Rivers also expanded her business knowledge, with persistence, patience and dedication to learning the business side of a running a veterinary practice.

She continues, “With my lack of education in business management, my less-than-ideal understanding of tax laws and accounting, and my unrealistic deep-seated fears of the IRS eased by Jeff Bliss, the accounting director at Burzenski. With each conference call, not one time did I ever feel incompetent or that I had made the wrong decision by pursuing this dream. I’m definitely a “Burzenski-lifer,” and will stick with them during the extent of my professional career.”

Once she was comfortable and excelling in her new role as a practice owner, Burzenski & Company, PC introduced Dr. Rivers to a supplemental avenue to expand her understanding and personal and professional growth through Strategic Growth Alliance (SGA). As a peer study group of veterinarians, SGA members delve into practice management to learn how to compare practice performance to peer and national benchmarks, increase revenue, capitalize on economic changes and new industry trends, control practice expenses and learn successful business practices from other members.

“SGA keeps me grounded and reminds me that I am not the sole survivor on an island in the middle of nowhere without anyone to discuss life experiences and future goals with,” says Dr. Rivers. “As a member, I also find that small business owners, in a world of corporate consolidation, need to find ways to stick together and continue to show young veterinarians that private practice ownership can be done and can be successful. It has become a passionate topic for me, and I enjoy sharing this compassion with other members of SGA at our bi-annual meetings.”

Since 2017, when Dr. Rivers took ownership of Somerset Veterinary Hospital, she has not only built a thriving practice, but also thanks to the staff at Burzenski &Company, and her involvement with SGA, has secured much-needed experience on the business side of running a veterinary practice. This has also helped her to set long and short-term goals for herself and her practice.

“I think what works the best for me is being motivated by setting and achieving goals, and filling my practice with people who are cut from the same cloth,” adds Dr. Rivers. “I have learned that culture is by far the most important component of a business. If you can foster a culture where people feel supported, believe in what they are doing on a daily basis, and love coming to work each day – patients and pet owners all benefit.”

The Future for Somerset Veterinary Hospital

Dr. Rivers is extremely pleased with the path she has led Somerset Veterinary Hospital since 2017. She looks forward to what the future has in store for herself, her patients and their owners, and her staff. The current original location for Somerset Veterinary Hospital is being utilized to its fullest potential with four full time doctors practicing high quality medicine and surgery.

Continues Dr. Rivers, “Our biggest goal right now is to start a second location to extend our practice into nearby communities even further. As we approach this goal, new team members will be welcomed into the same culture that is now fostered within the fabric of the practice – compassionate care, exceptional service, and a team that embraces laughing and learning together. I am excited about the expansion of our practice and with the continued guidance and support from the team at Burzenski & Company, I know I am in the best position for success.”
