Josh Storm, DVM, CVA, became the owner/director of Woodley Gardens Veterinary Care in Rockville, MD in 2015. Taking over ownership of a solo-doctor hospital that he had never worked in before, and without prior management carryover through the transition, was a challenging task. Dr. Storm had to build a team around him to help navigate the nuances of practice ownership while providing care for his patients and clientele. With the guidance of Gary I. Glassman, CPA, partner at Burzenski & Company, and his team, Dr. Storm was able to do just that. “It’s just a matter of doing what we each do best and utilizing the proper resources to make the rest fall into place.”

Dr. Storm was first introduced to Burzenski & Company prior to purchasing his practice as he contacted the firm to get advice from veterinary accountant and business advisor Gary Glassman. “Gary was instrumental in the financial evaluation of the practice to ensure the purchase was a smart plan for me personally, and he was helpful and available throughout the entire sale process. Immediately post-sale, he then helped me look at the financials so we could set the best course of action for the start of my practice,” says Dr. Storm.

After determining the majority of his time was best spent building his clientele in the exam rooms,Dr. Storm decided to use the virtual office support and bookkeeping service offered by Burzenski & Company.  While the practice staff was busy running their veterinary practice, Burzenski & Company provided monitored bookkeeping services through a hosted QuickBooks® solution accessed through the Internet. With the expertise and guidance offered by Burzenski & Company, practice owners and their staff can access timely and accurate financial information needed to improve operations and increase profitability.

Says Dr. Storm, “We have used the Burzenski virtual bookkeeping service since 2015. We uploaded financials through a secure online platform, and Linda Forgione and Gail Cable at Burzenski accessed our QuickBooks® files to provide transaction entries, monthly data review and financial statements. A lot of change needed to happen at the beginning of owning my practice. I was extremely pleased and comfortable to use the bookkeeping services from such a trusted source as Burzenski & Company, while learning the back end of the practice. Best of all, I knew our financials would be done right and that freed us from many complex accounting tasks to allow us to spend more time managing the veterinary practice.”

As the practice grew over time, Burzenski & Company employees Linda Forgione and Gail Cable have trained Dr. Storm and Joanne, the hospital manager, to take on the day to day and monthly financial operations.  “At the beginning, we didn’t know bookkeeping and it was simply helpful to know the job got done right.  Now, thanks to Linda and Gail, we were able to learn how to do the financial aspect of the job well.  They have been available for virtual web training meetings, phone calls and answer emails with questions quickly.  The best part is that Linda and Gail continue to be there to offer any necessary expertise to this day.”

In addition to the virtual office support and bookkeeping services, Dr. Storm has monthly phone calls with Gary Glassman to keep abreast of the practice’s current status and establish long- and short-term plans for the practice.  “Over time, through monthly meetings with Gary, I was able to dissect my hospital financials, achieve certain benchmarks, manage inventory more appropriately, receive advice for joining buying groups, use recommended companies for adjunct services like payment systems, and run my practice more efficiently.  We were able to add an associate veterinarian and other team members, and start a retirement plan for the staff.  The one-on-one care and guidance I received from Burzenski & Company helped me grow as a businessman, and allowed the hospital and team to grow too.”

According to Dr. Storm, working with Burzenski & Company remotely has never been an issue. Between email and phone calls, communication between the two offices has always been easy.

“Everything is done through the secure portal and emails are always answered quickly,” says Dr. Storm. “As long as you know how to use a computer, you can use the portal on the Burzenski website. It’s not complicated at all. I’m grateful that Burzenski & Company has been able to take care of the back end of the practice so that my team and I can do the daily patient care and grow the hospital.”
